Social Media is Word of Mouth

Social Media is Word of MouthIf you haven’t heard the news, here it is:

Social media is the word of mouth advertising for the 21st century.

What was once talked about with friends over dinner or a drink is now being blogged about, posted online, updated on Facebook, or tweeted. And the audience has transformed from one or two to one or two hundred (thousand?).

Steve Strauss discusses social media as the new word of mouth advertising in great length at the AMEX Open Forum.  Check out the article here.

I’m curious… has anyone else out there had any experience with social media as word of mouth advertising?

You Go, Girls!

Good morning blog fans,
You Go, Girls!
You know, I was poking around the AMEX Open Forum website the other day (it really is a tremendous resource for small businesses…talented contributors, tips for marketing, strategies for managing and more…if you haven’t checked it out yet, you should.)

One article caught my attention: “Partnering for Growth: Women-Owned Businesses as the 5th Largest GDP in World” by Marcy Shinder. The title pretty much says it all. If women-owned businesses were grouped together as a single country, they would be the 5th-largest GPD in the world. This is a fact that deserves some attention and reflection.

Shinder goes on to discuss briefly some of the challenges facing women with a desire to start their own business. The biggest? MONEY! After money, the next biggest challenge is growth. Shinder gives a few tips for growing, namely through networking. Building relationships and meaningful connections, she believes, can help these small-business owners bridge the gap between where they are today and where they’d like to be tomorrow.

Are there any women-owned businesses out there with a story to share?  We’d love to hear what your biggest challenges have been, and more importantly, how you overcame them. Or maybe one of you successful business women has a story about how networking helped you build your business!

Getting Things Done

Hey StormDawg fans,
Getting Things Done
Recently, John Jantsch (Duct Tape Marketing and blogger for the AMEX OPEN Forum) interviewed David Allen, author of the book Getting Things Done.  In his interview, Allen recounts his simple system:

Get everything out of your head that represents any commitment you can’t finish when you think of it. Sooner than later make a real discrete decision about what exactly those things mean to you, meaning what outcomes you’re committed to, what action steps you need to take. Park the results of that thinking into appropriate categories in a systematic way, so that you can, stage four, go back and look at all of that inventory at any point in time so you can recalibrate. So stage five, you then engage your resources or take an action based upon a trusted choice out of all that, plus your intuition, as opposed to being driven by latest and loudest, and hope it’s right.

Get on the News Yourself!

Good morning StormDawg fans,
Get on the news yourself!
I came across a very interesting article in American Express’s OPEN Forum by Rohit Bhargava titled, “How to get your small business covered in the media.”  Bhargava gives four great tips:

  1. Be an expert
  2. Remember the story isn’t always about you
  3. Start with bloggers
  4. Learn the beats and players

Give the article a good read…I promise it’ll be worth your time!
